Letter from LA Harper to his love, Elizabeth Dantzler, written while stationed on James Island in October 1863. The letter is written first horizontally and then diagonally as a means of conserving paper during the Civil War. This letter, from the Harper Dantzler collection, is one of approximately 100 letters between Harper and Dantzler. In the letters Harper, hired as a tutor for Dantzler and her sisters, professes his love for her and tells of the hardships of war.
