We Need Your Input!

As part of our planning efforts and upcoming grant applications, we are seeking community feedback on the future trail system at the Dorchester Heritage Center. Your input will help guide decisions about trail features, amenities, and how the trails can best serve and benefit our community.

We invite you to share what you would like to see included and provide any additional insights you feel are important. The survey takes less than five minutes to complete, and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for helping shape this important project.

This is our vision:

The project consists of a porous surfaced parking area with an adjacent boardwalk to move over a wetland area to the trailhead. The trailhead has a raised deck platform and benches. The trailhead structure has covered trail maps, signage and bulletin board for postings, rules, hours etc. and a trail book for visitors to sign in and leave feedback. Wayfinding signage, interpretive panels and trail markers to direct visitors are placed as needed throughout .

Trail 1 – The Edisto Natchez-Kusso Trail is dedicated to the story of this local Native American Tribe including their use of native plants for healing and health. It includes 12 interpretive panels to educate visitors about the Tribe as they visit. The initial trail is an approximately one mile loop with expansion planned for the future.

Trail 2 – The Trail That Heals is designed to help individuals that suffer from PTSD and other stress related disorders. Dorchester County as well as Charleston, Berkley and Colleton Counties, have numerous veterans that suffer from PTSD and other traumatic disorders. The Trail is not exclusive to veterans, it is meant for all who suffer from this debilitating ailment including Police, Fire, EMS as well as the general public. The initial trail is an approximately 3/4 mile loop with expansion planned in the future. Pathways will be suitable for limited mobility visitors and wheelchairs. Integral to the trail are multiple “Healing Stations” that have signage that instructs visitors in activities and exercises to relieve the impacts of PTSD.
