The Dorchester Heritage Center reached an exciting milestone this month as community leaders, supporters, partners, and neighbors gathered in Ridgeville to officially break ground on our new state-of-the-art facility. This moment has been years in the making, and the ceremony highlighted both the vision behind the project and the remarkable network of people who are helping bring it to life.

A Meaningful Keynote from the State Superintendent of Education

We were honored to welcome Ellen Weaver, South Carolina Superintendent of Education, as our keynote speaker. Her message underscored the importance of preserving local history and making it accessible to students, educators, and families across our state. She remarked on the powerful role museums play in strengthening community identity and inspiring future generations. Her presence at the ceremony was a reminder that this project is more than a building. It is an investment in education.

Honoring the Partners Who Have Walked With Us From the Start

A project of this scale requires steady guidance and trusted partnerships. Gilbert + Lee, our commercial builder, has been with us from the very beginning. Their expertise, commitment, and patience have shaped every step of this effort. We are grateful for their leadership and for the care they are taking to create a facility worthy of Dorchester County’s story.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the Bank of South Carolina for supporting both the ceremony and the project itself. Their involvement reflects a long-standing belief in strengthening our region through responsible investment and community partnership. Their support helps ensure this center will stand strong for decades to come.

Gratitude for Our Board, Volunteers, and Supporters

Our Board of Directors deserves special recognition for guiding the museum and this massive construction project with clarity, diligence, and heart. Their leadership has kept this vision moving forward, even through challenges, and their dedication reflects the best of community stewardship.

We cannot overlook the many volunteers, donors, and supporters who have poured their time, resources, and passion into the Heritage Center. From fundraising to planning to hands-on work behind the scenes, this project has only been possible because so many people believed in what it would mean for Dorchester County.

Looking Ahead

The groundbreaking marks the start of construction on a facility that will house museum exhibits, archives, educational spaces, community gathering areas, and outdoor experiences that connect people to our county’s rich natural landscape. It will be a destination for learning, preservation, and celebration.

We are grateful to everyone who made this day possible. The next chapter of the Dorchester Heritage Center is officially underway, and we look forward to building a place that honors our past while inspiring our future.
