“I have felt my strongest artistic emotions when suddenly confronted with the sublime beauty of sculptures executed by the anonymous artists of Africa. These works of a religious, passionate, and rigorously logical art are the most powerful and most beautiful things the human imagination has ever produced. I hasten to add that, nevertheless, I detest exoticism.”

-Pablo Picasso

Experience something beautiful and spiritual. Join the DHC for a new traveling collection on African Aboriginal artifacts.

On display from February 4-28, these artifacts include sculptures, masks, and pottery and they all display intricate craftsmanship, many holding deep spiritual significance.

Historians today recognize that art traditions were brought by enslaved people taken from Africa and were adapted and integrated into the cultural fabric of the New World. This influence on various forms of art and music, both religious and secular, has shaped the cultural landscape of the Americas.

The exhibit aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of African art and its enduring legacy, emphasizing the resilience and creativity of African peoples throughout history.

By hosting this traveling exhibit, we celebrate the rich artistic heritage of Africa and acknowledge the significant contributions of African art to global culture. The exhibit serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to transcend boundaries and connect people across time and space.
